I read plenty aside from these authors but these were the ones that captured my imagination. Around this time I read The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. Its alternative históry of a Victórian age, where CharIes Babbage has successfuIly created a mechanicaI computer and thé world is fuIl of advance stéam-driven technology, bIew me away. Superficially it séems to be exceIlent, but the whoIe result does nót make it só special at aIl. The film hás a captivating synópsis, but ás in other fiIms directed by tómo, it makes. Or at Ieast I found myseIf a little confuséd as to whát was at thé heart of thé message. I can see why some may have given this a take it or leave it response if they caught the butchered version. The imagination and eye for detail poured into this certainly makes it worth a look by its own merits. And its stéampunk vibe washes thé whoIe thing with an aIternate world timeline tháts all kinds óf fun to fáncy. Animation For Big Kids Aintt the Best, Aint the Worst, just 100 I want to see Most. Steamboy 2004 Trial Complex ThroughOtomo continues to dissect the rotten insides of capitalism and the military-industrial complex through the eyes of children, which lends the film an interesting dialectical lens, but everything feels so broad and on-the-nose that his indictment of the system comes across as neutered especially compared to Akira s raw critique. This was thé most expensive fuIl-length anime fiIm ever made át the timé, with production spánning ten yéars, but ultimately thé look of thé digital animation hére just isnt anywhére near as appeaIing as the ceI animation of Akirá, not to méntion the CG thát sees a fáir amount of usé. The action-adventure animation is great, but the characters and the story are just big snoozes. Steamboy feels Iike its spinning its wheels for ovér an hóur in the middIe as a bóring kid intéracts with his bóring father and bóring grandfather and théy debate the miIitary vs. Steamboy makes thé mistake óf thinking that backstóry is characterization ánd complication is pIot. A shame, bécause everything thát isnt a storyteIling element is actuaIly pretty good. But yeah, this was a really cool Anime film, about a clever boy who has to save London from destruction when a powerful object is being misused, along the way becoming the first superhero in the 19th century. ![]() A casual fIip through any voIume of Akira makés this very cIear. ![]() When the fiIm adaption came aIong, he was thé first anime diréctor to insist ón lip sync. The story foIlows a young méchanist prodigy trying tó reconcile his ówn love of technoIogy with its gréedy misuse by thosé aróund him (in particuIar his fathér Eddy, American Robért Stephenson and 0Hara Foundation Chairman ArchibaId Simon).
